White's Memorial Presbyterian Church, originally known as Silver Creek Chapel, was dedicated in 1877. The original building, 75 feet long and 30 feet wide, was erected by Margaret Faulkner White Breckinridge, who later became Mrs. Robert Breck. The church was intended to be a memorial to her husband. The land was given by her son, George D. White, in the latter part of the year 1876.
In the month of September 1877, the Reverend Robert Breck, D.D., of Richmond, Kentucky, began preaching two and sometimes three Sabbaths a month, continuing until July 1880.
A small band of thirteen persons presented themselves to be organized. Four more were added the same year and in July 1878 fifteen persons made professions of faith and two came by letter.
The first trustees of the church, who received the deed for the building, were Joseph W. Bales, John F. White, and W.B. Jones.
In August of 1878, the church was reported to the Presbytery of Transylvania.
It was Mrs. Breckinridge's hope that the church might grow and prosper and prove a blessing to the neighborhood as well as a spiritual guide and anchor for the Christian people of the community.
It is a noteworthy fact that it is the only remaining country Presbyterian Church that has survived in Madison County.
Note: Read about the history that White's Memorial Presbyterian Church shares with First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, Kentucky in the Reverend Dr. Curtis Christian's new book, They Yet Speak (2014).
